Girls on the Run (GOTR) Napa & Solano is a healthy, fun empowerment program for girls in 3rdthrough 5thgrade. In the Napa Valley, GOTR kicks off its after school from American Canyon to Calistoga, and throughout Solano County on September 10 through November 17. Trained volunteer life coaches lead small groups of girls through research-based experiential life skill curriculum, which is creatively combined with fun games, discussions and running or moving.
During the ten-week program, girls develop essential life and leadership skills to help them navigate their world and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. Each participant receives two T-shirts, a water bottle, healthy snacks, 5 K entry, celebration and graduation gifts. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project, as well as being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
GOTR is based on six Cs: confidence, character, care, connections, competence and contribution.
Twice weekly lessons are designed to build girls’ self-worth and help them feel greater confidence. Fun activities help girls celebrate their unique-selves and teach them how to stand up for themselves and others.
By gaining awareness of the power they possess to make intentional decisions, girls learn to choose positive actions, which demonstrate respect and responsibility towards themselves and others.
Girls learn to respond to others and themselves with empathy, care and compassion. Using their I statements in a healthy manner are incorporated into different activities and games to reinforce the importance of expressing their feelings. Lessons and activities further develop their ability to sympathize and empathize both within and beyond their social groups.
GOTR lessons also focus on cooperative skills and team building through a positive group setting. Girls learn firsthand how to create positive connections with parents and caregivers, teachers, peers and their communities.
The program provides skill-building experiences to nurture girls’ physical, mental, social and emotional competencies that they then apply in other areas of their lives, such as home and school.
When girls develop and strengthen these life skills, they can thrive. GOTR inspires girls to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. This comes to life through a key element of the season when each group creates and executes a community service project.
GOTR Napa & Solano encourages all girls to participate, regardless of their financial situation, ethnicity or body type.
