Make the most of the long Labor Day weekend with a fun family outing. We’ve suggested a few, from closing weekend of the Magic Treehouse exhibit at the Bay Area Discovery Museum to the Aloha Poly Fest in San Francisco and the annual Sausalito Art Festival.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus

Aloha Poly Fest

Bring the entire family for some great entertainment and fun activities and learn about Polynesian (Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, Cook Islands, New Zealand), Melanesian (Fiji) and Micronesian (Guam) islands in the Pacific Ocean through cultural dances, songs, crafts, and more. Visit the international market for island-style merchandise from vendors exhibiting rare and unique items for the indoors, outdoors and personal use. Don’t miss the Kids Korner for arts & crafts, face painting, and playtime activities. Of course, you can always wait for the Napa Valley Aloha Festival September 17-18.

We just finished reading the first four books in the best-selling children’s book series, the Magic Tree House written by Mary Pope Osborne, and we’re re-reading them our daughter loved them so. We were excited to find about The Magic Tree House traveling exhibit at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which allows children to branch out through history via a magical, time-traveling tree house—just like the book! Children explore history through immersive environments, period costumes, props, and more than 30 hands-on learning experiences. The exhibit closes this Sunday, September 4, so don’t miss out!

Sausalito Art Festival
Saturday-Monday, September 3-5, 10 am-7 pm Sat and Sun; until 5 pm on Monday

The Sausalito Art Festival, featuring fine art, food, wine and spectacular performances, is held annually on Labor Day Weekend. Wall-to-wall musical entertainment headlines the Sausalito Art Festival, with rock, pop, folk, swing, blues, jazz, and classical music performed by top-name artists featured on three stages throughout the Festival grounds. Headliners at this year’s festival include Super Diamond, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Charlie Musselwhite, and the Zombies. A children and families area features hands-on activities and entertainment for all ages.

Labor Day Open House

Crown Memorial State Beach: Crab Cove Visitors Center, Alameda

Enjoy a day of fun at the shoreline! 11 am: beach exploration; 2 pm: family nature fun time-seaweed science; 3 pm: fish feeding in the aquariums. Ongoing throughout the day: meet the gopher snake and box turtle; follow the self-guided history trail; make a nature craft; watch a nature movie in the Old Wharf Classroom. No registration; drop-in.
